Álvaro Llanza (b. 1992, Madrid) is a Spanish artist currently living in Houston, Texas. Álvaro understands art as a space of fiction and play.
His work is built upon a series of tensions: between abstraction
and the figurative, the panoramic and the close-up, dynamism
and stillness. His paintings depict kaleidoscopic landscapes scattered with enigmatic figures.
Álvaro draws references from both art history and the
mythography of anime and science fiction. Among his main
influences are Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly, as well as the
cinematic worlds of Akira and Dune, placing him within a
generation of artists shaped by the popular and consumer
culture of the 1990s and 2000s.
